Digital Media: To Infinity and Beyond!

by: Romelie Janelle Maranan

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our heart unto wisdom." -Psalm 90:12

Taking the Journalism Students into a deeper perspective of the digital world, Go Beyond Studios held their digital campaign launch "Pursuing a Digital Career: An Introduction to the Digital Agency Setting" at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines- College of Communication last Friday, February 28.

Go Beyond Studios is a World-Class digital studio partnered with a top digital agency, Code and Theory, that specializes in the creation of digital experiences. They provide a more comprehensive solution and revolutionize people's digital engagement through different methods such as website design and development, digital planning, mobile and tablet applications, augmented reality solutions, games, social applications and other digital mediums.

The interesting fact about Go Beyond Studios is that they make the technical, scientific and complicated vast digital world into a fun, amusing, interactive and completely accessible world. Their creations do not only contribute to the advancement of our digital engagement but also have a paramount influence to our personal lives.

"Life is too short to waste it unnecessarily so we should live our lives to the fullest." Every person should learn the right way to excel in simple existence and achieve their goals to enjoy life. That is where Go Beyond Studios‘digital campaign, #ForwardFriday comes in. Discussed by Mr. Melchor Jamero, President and COO of Go Beyond Studios, #ForwardFriday campaign is a social movement that aims to help and inspire people make the most out of their days. Because of the fast-growing online world, this campaign will definitely be a big hit.

The campaign generally focused on how to achieve our goals in life. Mr. Jamero gave three (3) points about achieving our goals during his discussion through his various activities: "The shortest path between two points is a straight line.", "The target that you can‘t see is a target that you can't hit." and "You pay attention to your professor during lectures." These reminded us that we should always focus on our goals, never hesitate, and always go on a straight path to achieve our dreams. One of the best feelings is to have our dreams come true. Through this discussion, plus the good speaker who talked very well during the forum, the students are motivated and inspired to pursue their dream.

Go Beyond Studios also discussed about "Driving Traffic to your Content Through Search Engine Optimization". Discussed by Mr. Odelon Miranda, Chief Technology Officer of Go beyond Studios, the talk focused on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and how it works. He discussed about its importance and its uses in the digital world. Unlike the first talk, it is less interactive, more talk but we learned a lot.

"You are programmed since birth. But you have the choice to design your life to strive for excellence." The best thing that I learned in the forum is that we should not limit our abilities as what the world have dictated to us. We should strive for excellence, and through the help of the digital world, everything is possible. And may I say that the seminar is very successful because everyone had fun and learned at the same time, plus it is free! Go Beyond Studios should continue to reach out to different schools to disseminate information about the other side of the digital world.

Online Journalism: Seems easy? Think again (The complementary article)

by Lloyd Zapanta
Interview by: Romelie Janelle Maranan and Lloyd Zapanta

Due to today's growing demand, needs are all sprouting everywhere online. Almost all types of market have already set foot in the Internet and have their own execution on how they will be presenting their respective services to their distant clients. Media conglomerates, including their news departments are undeniably one of the riders of this worldwide trend.

Nowadays, news outlets have their own respective websites catering to different news sections like breaking news, national, entertainment, business, weather and live traffic updates, which shows the step of journalism in the online platform. Even websites with audience of their genre use online journalism to properly disseminate information to their readers.

Pam Sallegue, an SEO specialist for the website HopeKayGod.net, tells us her encounters and the truth behind the so-called "easy", online journalism.

Pam tells us the points-of-view of an online journalist.

The demands of being an Online Journalist

'A good online journalist is a fast thinker, someone who could research and write news, and post online, but with the right information, because it doesn’t make sense kung mabilis ka nga mag-isip pero wrong info naman nabibigay mo.' Pam started when asked about the demands of being an online journalist.

As an SEO specialist and also a blogger, Pam always read anything she could possibly give priority in search engines when a certain keyword is entered. Most keywords put in a search engine comes from something trending, that's why Pam is always alert in monitoring stories which are interconnected to many others.

'... An online journalist should also know what are the "trendings", hindi lang trending sa news, but also yung algorithm ng Google or social media or other platforms, like when they started using hashtags, before sa Twitter lang yun, but now it’s everywhere, my point there is those algorithms help, it helps boost their online presence, like one time nag trend yung #YolandaPH, and sa Twitter ng GMA, they’re using that hashtag, when someone click on that hashtag, big possibility na sa GMA na tweet yung mababasa nila, and that tweet has URL directing to their main website, so may magbabasa ng news nila.'

According also to Pam, online journalism is a much freer type of journalism which means readers have the freedom to respond and share their thoughts online unlike in print, that's why responsibility is a big issue in entering this type of journalism.

'Online journalist should know the ethics both sa traditional and online. Kaya merong “Think before you click”. Ngayon pa naman masyado nang malaya lahat, may mabasa lang na hindi magandang status ang tao, libreng libre nang mag-comment. Just be responsible enough, lalong lalo na sa pagsusulat ng news.' Pam told the interviewers. 'You have to be ready sa mga comments.'

The perks of being an Online Journalist

Because of the vast network of information and communication, Pam shares to us the advantages of having your article posted online.

'When your article is visible online, so is your name, and that’s a good thing lalo na kung maganda talaga yung mga articles mo. Also, unlike sa traditional journalism kadalasan sa Philippines lang mababasa yung article kasi nga naman ginawa naman yun for Philippines lang... Minsan OK din naman na nababasa yun ng mga kababayan natin sa ibang bansa, and yun yung advantage ng online, they’re being read even sa abroad. Mas malaki yung chance na mas maraming nakakabasa ng article mo kapag online, of course sino ba namang ayaw ng maraming readers.' Pam shared.

Citing the reality of the online market nowadays, she also told us the possible reality of online journalism based on her own views as an online staff.

'I’m not so sure, pero mas malaki yata ang sweldo sa online kaysa dyaryo. Mas mataas kasi ang rate ng ads kapag online. Meaning mas mataas ang generation ng money, tapos hindi naman masyadong mahal ang isang website, all they need is someone who will design the site, maintain the site, and the contents, eh sa print, everyday gumagastos sila to print, tapos wala pang assurance na lahat yun mabebenta. That’s how I concluded that salary online is better than on traditional.'

'[At] free Facebook and Twitter!' Pam added jokingly.

Traditional or Online?

'I tried writing for a newspaper, and I think forever ko nang iko-consider na achievement yun kasi mahirap naman talagang makapag-publish sa newspaper, pero considering the world we have now, this generation is a generation na halos lahat ng ginagawa nasa Internet na, lahat ng binabasa nasa World Wide Web.' Pam admitted.

Developing with the new media, opportunities will soon grow into a more open-space platform where everyone is expected to gain access. But nobody can tell when will this phenomenon stop. Only technology can predict.

'I just hope na as we transition to this new medium, ma-establish na din yung mga rules, policy, ethics like what we have with the traditional, kasi sa ngayon sa sobrang dami ng information available online, akala ng iba OK lang na basta bastang kunin yun, it’s not, and that’s what I want and hoping to have soon, yung system, and yung mabawasan ang copy-paste.'

Pam Sallegue is an alumna of PUP College of Communication-Department of Journalism.

Online Journalism: Seems easy? Think again.

by Lloyd Zapanta
Interview by Romelie Janelle Maranan & Lloyd Zapanta

Many of us think that anything done with technology becomes an easier task, but for Pam, Journalism will still bring the same pressure, online or print.

In the past decade, news publishers made its online presence stronger as readers from the Internet grows in an unprecedented pace, making it a potential arena for journalists to compete with their credibility, popularity, and their ability to deliver real-time news updates.

"A good online journalist is a fast thinker, someone who could research and write news, and post online, but with the right information; because it doesn’t make sense kung mabilis ka nga mag-isip pero wrong info naman nabibigay mo."

And with that, here's a photo essay that will somehow give you hint on how stressful online journalism could be.
